Autogenous bone remains the gold standard for alveolar ridge reconstruction owing to its superior biological properties and predictable clinical outcomes. Among the available augmentation techniques, the Khoury shell technique has gained widespread acceptance as a minimally invasive and biologically driven approach capable of achieving substantial horizontal and vertical bone regeneration while minimizing donor site morbidity.
Successful application of this technique, however, extends beyond mastering the surgical steps. It requires a comprehensive understanding of bone biology, careful case selection, sound surgical planning, meticulous soft tissue management, and the ability to recognize and prevent potential complications. This workshop is designed to bridge the gap between biological principles and practical surgical execution, providing participants with a structured and reproducible protocol that can be readily incorporated into daily clinical practice.
Following a concise evidence-based theoretical session, participants will perform the essential steps of the Khoury technique in a hands-on workshop using mandibular models, allowing them to gain practical experience in bone harvesting, shell preparation, fixation and graft stabilization in a controlled educational environment.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the biological principles underlying autogenous bone grafting and the rationale behind the Khoury shell technique.
- Understand the complete surgical workflow, including flap design, bone harvesting, shell preparation, fixation, graft stabilization, and primary wound closure.
- Recognize common surgical pitfalls and apply strategies to minimize complications and improve treatment predictability.
- Gain practical hands-on experience performing the core surgical steps of the Khoury technique on mandibular models.
Workshop Format (5 Hours)
The workshop consists of approximately 3 hours of interactive theoretical instruction, focusing on biological concepts, surgical principles, clinical decision-making, and video-based case demonstrations, followed by 2 hours of supervised hands-on training on mandibular models. During the practical session, participants will perform the key steps of the Khoury shell technique, including cortical bone harvesting, shell preparation and fixation, and particulate bone graft placement.
