Bioactive dental materials were introduced for the first time in the late 1960s by Professor Larry Hench.  Most studies focused on the interaction of the Bioactive glass with bone in a biologic environment.  Our research group started studying the bioglass interaction with tooth structure in 2006 in Tokyo Medical and Dental University under the guidance of Professor Junji Tagami, Associate Professor Masayuki Otsuki and members of the Operative and the Cariology Department.  The studies conducted in our department in Japan showed the ability of the bioglass to interact efficiently with dentin and suggested an efficient modality to treat dentin hypersensitivity cases based on our technique.  Our research project was adopted by Japan Society For Promotion of Science in 2009 and resulted in numerous Q1 publications and multiple US patents.

This presentation will discuss the concept of applying the bioglass for treating enamel and dentin demineralized and eroded lesions, moreover, the differences between various types of bioactive glasses and their potential incorporation in adhesive systems will be discussed.
