The periodontal therapy mainly involves scaling and root planning alone or combined with hard and soft tissue surgery. Mechanical therapy alone is not sufficient to completely remove bacteria from within the pocket environment. The presence of bacteria affects the healing and hence the regeneration, resulting in reduced success. Limited potential of the conventional mechanical therapy in removing periopathogens, prompted the adjunctive use of Lasers for the treatment of Periodontal & Implant Disease. In the management of Periodontal & Peri Implant infections, Soft tissue and All Tissue Lasers have been employed for reshaping of soft and hard tissue, bacterial reduction, debridement, degranulation, calculus removal and bone regeneration. Adjunct use of Lasers improve surgical technique, predictability and reduce complications. Photobiomodulation effect of Soft Tissue Lasers modulate cell metabolism and stimulate cell proliferation leading to faster 3-D healing with minimal post-operative discomfort. In addition, Minor Periodontal procedures, such as frenectomy, gingivectomy, gingival depigmentation, crown lenghthening can too be performed in a minimally invasive manner with improved coagulation, clear surgical field and reduced patients anxiety. The presentation will provide an overview of Laser Assisted Periodontal & Implant procedures with special emphasis on predictability and long term outcomes in healthy as well as medically compromised patients.
