TMJ disorders are relatively common conditions which dentists encounter in their everyday practice. It can be either muscular in origin in the form of myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS) or it can involve the whole joint apparatus including the articular disc and osseous structures as in internal derangement and degenerative joint disease. In some cases, it can be both.

This presentation will address the etiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms as well as anatomical considerations of such a chronic and sometimes debilitating condition.

Management of TMD requires multidisciplinary approach including the Oral Surgeon, General Dentists, Prosthodontists and Orthodontists. Different treatment approaches will be discussed ranging from conservative measures like occlusal splint and physical therapy to more invasive procedures.
