The placement of dental implants has become a more popular and accessible treatment option provided by general dental practitioners (GDPs) who only need short training courses to start their career in implantology. Therefore, these GDPs became involved in dental implant maintenance and complications. The most common complications of implants are peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Like gingivitis, peri-implant mucositis is preventable by maintaining good oral hygiene. Peri-implantitis, on the contrary, is much more complex and technically challenging to treat. Studies have shown that the incidence of peri-implant diseases is relatively high ranging between 20% to 45% of cases, highlighting the need for maintenance and monitoring to prevent these conditions from undermining implant success. Early detection of peri-implant diseases and timely intervention are key for successful implant treatment. Therefore, this presentation will focus on raising awareness of GDPs about the prevention and early detection of peri-implant diseases in their daily dental practice.
